INTRODUCTION
This publication presents data from the 2013–14 Survey of Income and Housing (SIH) on Australian housing occupancy and costs, and relates these to characteristics such as tenure, household composition, dwelling structure, age of household reference person and income.
In 2013–14 the SIH included additional information on housing mobility and conditions. The additional content includes housing topics such as length of time in dwelling, number of times moved in the last five years, reasons for moving and characteristics of previous dwelling occupied. The additional content includes aspects of the dwelling occupied, such as major structural problems and repairs and maintenance carried out in the past 12 months.
Previously the additional housing content was presented in Housing Mobility and Conditions, 2007–08 (cat. no. 4130.0.55.002). In 2013–14, this content will be included as an additional data cube in Housing Occupancy and Costs, Australia (cat. no. 4130.0).
This issue is the first fully electronic release of SIH data, with separate Excel data cubes available from the ‘Downloads’ tab.
ABOUT THE SURVEY OF INCOME AND HOUSING
The SIH was conducted annually from 1994–95 to 1997–98, and then in 1999–2000, 2000–01 and 2002–03. Commencing in 2003–04 the SIH has been conducted every two years, and has been integrated with the Household Expenditure Survey (HES) every six years. In 2003–04 and 2009–10 the SIH was integrated with the HES, as it is again in 2015–16. In 2005–06, 2007–08, 2011–12, and 2013–14, the SIH was run as a stand–alone survey.
The 2013–14 SIH collected information from a sample of 14,162 households over the period July 2013 to June 2014. The key topics of the SIH include income, wealth, and housing.
CHANGES IN THIS CYCLE
Key changes in 2013–14 compared with 2011–12 include:
- a decrease in sample size from 14,569 to 14,162 caused by higher sample loss and lower response rates.
- extra housing mobility content that was last collected in 2007–08;
- a new question on caring responsibilities;
- inclusion of disability questions that were last collected in 2009–10; and
- new content on household disbursements of superannuation lump sums.
